Stelios Petsas had his own way during the debate on the draft Budget of 2027.
He supported government economic policy, recognized the positive results of the economy, but did not mince his words regarding European fiscal rules. And the best part?
Even ministers applauded him!
The ND lawmaker put on the table a question that is hard to pass over: when the country records primary surpluses above targets and the economy is performing better, how is it possible that margins remain so narrow for substantive support to citizens squeezed by high prices?
Petsas did not dispute the government trajectory or the economic staff.
On the contrary, he built upon the performance of the economy to demand the next step: more flexibility from Brussels and utilization of every available margin within 2026, without postponements for later.
And somewhere here lies the interest of the intervention.
Because it is one thing for colleagues to applaud in partisan huddles, and quite another for ministers to do so inside Parliament, when a lawmaker directly raises the issue of greater support for society.
